Years ago, a child was brought up and raised by the community.

The entire society, and its education, was communal. Our culture connected everyone, and each community member’s problem was the society’s problem. THE ECONOMIC HARDSHIP HAS LED TO disenfranchisement of society which has become more individualistic, isolation and poverty stricken. This has left the less fortunate members of society to fend for themselves. Today, we see boys as young as 10 years old struggling on their own trying to fend for themselves or their families. This has led to early school dropouts and boys getting to negative vices like crime etc.

Kijana Foundation – Helping Boys in Need

Kijana Foundation Incorporation is a non-profit organization established in 2023. The foundation was initially aimed at rescuing, rehabilitating, and empowering the vulnerable and underprivileged boy-child from the rural areas of Kisumu County-Kenya. The founder, Grayce Metho, realized that most charitable organizations in Kenya were focused primarily on the girl-child and the boys were left out. The observation indicated over time that boys were becoming more and more vulnerable, the concentration on the girl-child has pushed the boys to the back seat of society and family, this has led to less attention on the boys which in turn has led to high premature school dropouts by boys. We have boys that have performed exemplary in their primary national examinations but are unable to further their education due to lack of funds. The implication is that the country is denied an opportunity to benefit from hardworking and bright individuals who end up languishing in misery and become a burden to their defendants rather than becoming a beacon of hope.

A child’s foundation starts as early as middle school and continues through high school. At this stage, a child may consciously or unconsciously decide who they want to be in life. A boy-child living in poverty is likely to experience hunger and food insecurity. This often results in lower grades, dropping out of school, or no education at all. There are also physical, mental and emotional health, and behavioral problems. The challenge to have basic needs met can have a devastating lifelong effect.

Grayce decided to mobilize the boys and donated clothes, books, food, and laptops to keep the boys busy, safe, and out of trouble. Eventually, KIJANA FOUNDATION INC. was officially registered in Massachusetts as a non-profit organization.

No boy grows up dreaming of joining gangs, taking drugs, prostitution, incarceration, or the resulting possible premature death.
